Taxiluz is a pioneering charitable initiative launched by the Madrid Taxi Drivers’ Guild in 2016 to bring joy and the festive season to seniors living in residential care homes. Every December, on one chosen day, hundreds of taxi drivers come together and take hundreds of elderly residents in their taxis on a tour of the city’s Christmas lights, sharing with them the spirit of Christmas. Before dropping their guests back at their residences there is one final stop where all the participants congregate to enjoy a hot chocolate and spread Christmas cheer.
Despite the fact that restrictions on the leave of the elderly from the residences were about to prevent Taxiluz 2020 from taking place, the cooperation between the SRF and the Taxilux teams, has made it possible to rethink the initiative and adapt it to the changing circumstances of the pandemic enabling almost 300 elderly people in Madrid to safely enjoy the Christmas lighting and 170 taxi drivers to celebrate the awaited event.In order to bring joy and hope to the elderly of Madrid, who have been the most affected by the pandemic, the SRF has supported the coordinators of Taxiluz, Laura Castillo and Noelia Diaz with the overall preparations for the event that took place on 29 December.Taxiluz 2020 was a great success! It lifted the spirits of and brought immense joy to almost 300 elderly people and more than 170 compassionate taxi drivers, a magical way to end what has be an extremely difficult year for both the elderly and for taxi professionals.
