SPRINT Senior Care

WHAT THEY DO

SPRINT Senior Care is a community support service agency offering a wide range of practical and low-cost services to seniors and their caregivers. Due to growing concern about seniors’ food insecurity and social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, in March SPRINT Senior Care launched a brand new initiative: the COVID-19 Community Response Team (CRT). The CRT has grown into a large and successful initiative that incorporates a food bank, grocery/pharmacy/hygiene kit delivery, free meal delivery, virtual excercise classes and social programs, and wellness check phone calls. The CRT is supported by staff and 75 dedicated volunteers and has helped and continues to help hundreds of Toronto’s seniors.

IMPACT

The gift to SPRINT Senior Care has been allocated to their ‘COVID-19 Community Response Team’ initiative. Since March 2020, their team has delivered more than 42,000 free prepared healthy meals and more than 1,000 food bank/grocery orders. SPRINT volunteers have made 1,200 wellness check phone calls, and 530 seniors have joined their virtual exercise/social programs. The need for food and virtual social programs continues to be urgent, even as stores, restaurants, and workplaces re-open in Toronto. Many seniors continue to isolate at home due to their heightened risk from COVID-19, and this is likely to continue for several months. The gift from the Scheinberg Relief Fund is supporting SPRINT’s essential food security and social programs for seniors in Toronto.
