In Spain, when greyhounds (galgos) are no longer of any use to the hunters that own them they are abandoned or killed by barbaric methods. SOS Galgos not only rescues greyhounds and runs a rehoming programme, it also fights to address the root cause of the problem. SOS Galgos work at a legislative level to promote change and demand the creation of appropriate animal protection laws. SOS Galgos also delivers educational workshops in schools and campaigns to raise awareness about the plight of the greyhound in Spain. Their mission is to show people how wonderfully affectionate, noble and calm these dogs are, making them ideal pets especially for families with children.
The Scheinberg Relief fund has secured the relocation of 25 abandoned galgos from the south of Spain to SOS Galgos facilities outside Barcelona. The fund is covering the dogs expenses until they find a new permanent home. Like so many animal welfare charities SOS Galgos has seen a significant drop in income as a direct result of the pandemic. The fund has provided support to cover the charity’s overheads for 6 months.
